Portal User Permissions

I notice that the self service portal users don't get assigned a role or profile.  What data do they have permission to access?  Only that which is accessible by everyone?
No, only the data that is pertinent to them, i.e. cases on which they are the contact (or for portal super users, cases in which their account is set).

Note that this isn't the case in the Customer Portal.  Customer Portal users do have roles and profiles and can be explicitly shared to.
