adding buttons to SF.com interface

Can we add a button next to the My Tasks "New" button to launch an external application?

No. You cannot add buttons (e.g., "New") to the Salesforce.com interface, as of this writing.

You could, however, create a Web Link on the home page, or the detail page of any other standard object, which would work just as well.

There is a way to do it -- but it's client-side.

I'm hoping to open-source my code on how to do it after the Summer release.

Not yet something you can do in our UI, but has anyone played with GreaseMonkey

It does require Mozilla, but it's a neat idea.

Exactly. That's how I remove all the SF branding from the printable views and whatnot we use that become client-facing. It's also how I replace the broken SFDC mail merge system. It's also going to be replacing my SSL proxy for na1.

Still too early to tell, but as far as Mozilla is concerned I'm looking forward to the Summer '05 release.
