Are Assignment & Escalation Rules Uniquely Associated with the Cases Object?
I'm preparing for the Developer Certification and trying to understand the Sharing Model. Looks to me like Cases is the only object for which you can define Assignment and Escalation rules. Is this correct?
Couldn't the Assignment Rule functionality have been implemented in a Sharing Rule?
It could have been something like a sharing rule, but they chose to not do that; all standard objects have standard uses, and so you'll find some variances between those objects to distingush their usage. For example, only contracts can be "activated" and thus become protected against edits (in that particular design model).
Assignment rules are available on leads (Setup > Customize > Leads > Assignment Rules) and cases (Setup > Customize > Cases > Assignment Rules), while escalation rules apply only to cases (Setup > Customize > Cases > Escalation Rules).

Thankyou very much for that helpful reply!
