There is nothing to read from? should I read the whole document for apex and for visual force? I don't know even if the question style will focus on concepts as dev401 or it will focus on my coding knowledge?
For the 501 exam best source would be apex and visualforce developer guide and videos uploaded here-

For 401 best source would be online help and videos uploaded here-

Yes, you need to go through complete documentation. Read this blog-

I just passed this exam this week. I wrote a blog post about it at:
http://bobbuzzard.blogspot.com/2011/12/certified-forcecom-advanced-developer.html
bottom line is that you need to know the Apex and Visualforce developers guides inside out - the questions go into quite a level of detail, plus you'll need that knowledge for the assignment.
I'd suggest that you also need to have been writing apex and visualforce for a while - if you haven't you may find the project a struggle.
I am working with Visualforce and Apex from exactly one year and 3 months now. and I have before that 5 years experience in .net. I am not sure if this experience is enough or you recommend that I wait for a while before starting to think in the advanced developer certificate?
