use of static resource in custome field

Hi,

      I am facing one problem. I want to Display image in the custom field.

      I made one zip file i.e. Flags. Now i want to use this file into custom field. So how can i do that.

      Can any one tell me ? can i use $resource  in the field.If yes than what is the syntax ?

I'm pretty sure that you can only use static resources in Visualforce pages.

                   Thank you for your reply but i solved it using custom setting.Yes you are right static resources can only be used with the visualforce page only.
