Updating SalesForce fields from an external system

Hello Apex developers!

 

I need to be able to update SalesForce fields from an external system, can you guide me how to get started and provide me a code sample or something?

 

Any help would be greatly appreicaited.

You can use data loader tool for updating the salesforce fields.

I am talking about API capabilities. We have a seperate licensing system, and I need to be able to update ceratain SalesForce fields using it's API.
