related list counts - exposed via VF / Apex?

Question - are the related list counts exposed anyplace within Apex / VF, or must I SOQL for them to get the count()?

If not, wouldn't it make sense that the be exposed, since SF is gathering them anyway on page display, (and thereby avoiding unnecessary SOQL calls?)
