Step 1: Launch your Trailhead Playground by clicking Launch from any hands-on challenge.
when I select "Challenge" It takes me to the quiz.

Depending on what unit you are working on inside of the various modules some will be quizes others will require you to actually work inside of a SFDC instance(playground.) Typically, the intro units are all quizes as they need to familiarize you with SFDC before throwing you in head first. You will be up and playing around inside of an instance in no time, just have to get through the initail training =)
