Salesforce Auto Number is System Generated Unique number which will increment on the every record creation 

Another reason is Salesforce Record Name is Text which is of length 80 characters. if you want records name is more than 80  characters what we will do is we will make record name as auto number and we will create new custom field with higher length

But we can create a Text field with 80 character length.Why we need record Name field?
