How to change existing custom field in a managed package to unique?

We Need to change existing custom field in a managed package to a unique field. But seems the option is disabled.

Found a way, have a trigger to enforce the uniqueness. This is the best workaround to overcome rather than informing users substitute their references to new field.

You can't do it. I would say create your own custom unique field and update the data with code or declarativity way.
