How to update territory from parent account to child account

Suppose parent account having 3 territories then all 3 territories assigned to the child's account.

I am not too familier with the "territory" and what it is that well but I can see If this can be done via standard or trigger if you provide some more info?
What us territory though... is it a field (text field/picklist field etc..) on Account that some accounts has and you trying to fetch them into the child accounts if that childs parent account has one?
