Difference between a trailhead playground and DE?

Hi all,

Some badges want you to set up a specific DE for their use (especially security ones). Others seem to accept the standard TH Playground. What is the difference between a DE and TH Playground? I see some challenges that call for some things that should already be in the org (i.e. account, contact, user, oppoutunity) but they are not in a new TH Playground when I start a new one up.

Also, are there core features and license differences? Thanks!

What is the Admin Playground?
The Admin playground is a trial edition of Salesforce built just for Admins! Why should developers have all the fun? The Admin Playground is a FREE Salesforce Trial org for you to play around in – try new features, experiment with the AppExchange, and test different modifications. The Admin Playground is the best way for you, as an Admin, to practice building in Salesforce and learn without making changes to your production or sandbox orgs.

How is it different than a Developer Edition (DE) org?
Right now, Admin Playground and DE orgs look the same but have different names. Soon, Admin Playground orgs will have special walkthroughs and customizations that are especially geared towards Admins, so stay tuned!

How much does it cost?
Nothing. Zero. Zip. Nada! Admin Playgrounds are free!

Can I use it for Trailhead?
Absolutely! When you are taking a challenge, simply click “Launch Developer Edition” and log in with your Admin Playground credentials to link up your Admin Playground and earn points & badges. Trailhead is our fun, online learning tool that allows you to choose your own path to master Salesforce by going through 15-30min modules, earning points and badges along the way by completing challenges. Now you can take those challenges in your very own Admin Playground org! What are you waiting for? Go get your own Admin Playground TODAY!

 What is a Trailhead Playground?
A Trailhead Playground (TP) is your own personal Salesforce org that you'll use to tackle hands-on challenges. A Trailhead Playground is actually a Developer Edition (DE) that has been customized with Trailhead-specific bells and whistles. What else is cool about TPs?
  • You can store a TP on your Trailhead profile so you don't need to log in each time you tackle a hands-on challenge.
  • If you need a new TP, you can create up to 10 orgs at any time.
  • Easily switch between orgs via the hands-on org dropdown menu.
  • We've installed a managed package in your TP to customize your org with Trailhead-specific goodness, such as custom data/metadata and a welcome tab. We'll update these resources over time and push changes to your org automatically.

Can I still use a Developer Edition (DE) to complete hands-on challenges?
Yes, you can continue to use DEs for hands-on challenges. Select "Log in to Developer Edition" from the hands-on org dropdown menu to log in to your DE. If you want to create new orgs for future hands-on challenges, we recommend creating a Trailhead Playground for the best experience.

This still confuses me, or something is not working as expected....  I can't seem to connect to my TP.  In my Settings, I've made it the Default, yet the DE playground seems to keep coming up (I.e. I see one Account I manually created, and not all the sample Accounts, etc. that are being mentioned in the trailhead docs.)   Additonally, the TP account has a user name "curious-bear-..." which I did not explicitley set up, and was never prompted for password, etc.

I've managed to get to my TP by clicking the "Launch your hand on org"  (at the bottom of the trailhead tutorial page), but the sample data there still does not match what's mentioned in the tutorial - e.g. on page "Getting Started with Accounts and Contacts (https://trailhead.salesforce.com/admin_intro_accounts_contacts/admin_intro_accounts_contacts_basics)", it says:
...you start by going to the Accounts tab and finding the listing for ABC Genius Tech Consulting.
but I don't see that account in my TP

I have the same issue, the TPlayground does not have data within it or has some accounts but not much more so when trying to do the lessons much of the data is missing

To anyone who still have issues creating a TP.

Follow the steps at https://trailhead.salesforce.com/modules/trailhead_playground_management/units/create-a-trailhead-playground to create your TP. In essense, you will need to start a Hand-On Challenge, and choose Create a Trailhead Playground. There just follow the steps to create the TP you wish.

Hi everyone - I'm having a similar issue that was mentioned earlier: When I edit my account settings to allow related contacts, it made the update on my dev environment rather than in my playground. Does anyone know how I can fix this? I've tried changing my email address to one that isn't linked to my dev environ but it doesn't fix it. I can't complete the next challenge until I get this linked to the playground.
