Password protection exists for a good reason in Excel files: the author wants to restrict access to the file to protect proprietary code or information, and to prevent users from tampering with the moving parts. Depending on the author’s intent, a password may be required to open the file, to view the VBA code, or to access protected parts of a single worksheet.
 
Most commonly, password protection is applied to the worksheets. I almost never encounter workbooks that cannot be opened without first providing a password.

A question about cracking a password protected Excel file doesn’t specify which of the three types of password protection is involved. The question also puts me in the uncomfortable position of deciding whether the file author’s rights should be protected or trampled on. For this reason, I choose not to describe in detail how you crack the password protection.
There may be valid business reasons why password protection should be removed. The original author may have forgotten the password, or may have left the organization for a different job. In such cases, I am quite willing to assist in removing password protection. As a test of Asker sincerity, I require that the file be posted (or emailed to me) so I can satisfy myself that the request is genuine.
Password protection of Excel files should not be regarded as bullet-proof. Rather, they help keep honest people remaining honest. The bad guys can always get in, one way or another. Commercial software has always existed to remove the passwords, and it is readily available for purchase at reasonable prices from a number of different developers. I have never purchased or used any such software, and cannot comment on which is best.

In Excel 97, worksheet passwords could be removed using a two line VBA macro. Protection was strengthened in subsequent versions, and you had to cycle through 93,600 different hashcodes to find one that worked. The code posted by Kevin Jones (zorvek) in Nikky Rohn’s answer works that way, and takes a minute or less to find a password that can be used in place of the original (because it results in the same hashcode). As i recall, this software was originally posted in one of the Microsoft newgroups around May 2000 by Bob McCormick.
Excel 2013 raised the ante by adding a “salt” to the password. If a file is password protected in Excel 2013 or later, the Bob McCormick code will no longer be able to find an equivalent password. As far as I know, the commercial software continues to work, however.
In addition, there are manual methods of removing the password protection. These methods apply both to worksheet passwords and to those protecting the VBA code. Using these methods, it only takes me a minute or two to remove password protection. For obvious reasons, I do not post the details of these methods in an open forum, and would only consider providing them to trusted colleagues.
