Best method to create a custom log object for workflow rules and process builder?

We'd like to create a custom log each time a workflow rule or process builder completes.  What is the most scalable way to do this?

When data is changed automatically by a workflow rule or process builder we need a simple and quick way to view which rule made the change.

Having a custom log object will also help to determine which active rules no longer fire and should be either deprecated or modified.
