Is there an easy way to attach a document to a custom field in an Account or Contact record?

I don't think there is an easy way to do this, but I thought I'd ask.  Thanks!

You can create a custom field with field type Text Area (Rich). However, this will only allow you to attach png, gif, or jpeg's. Otherwise for other docs, easiest thing to do would be to use Notes & Attachments.
