Customize Standard Salesforce Header page

I would like to customize the standard Salesforce header page. Also, the drop down user menu. Is this possible?

Thanks for your response. The thing I'm actually looking for is that there is a picklist field present on the User object. So I would like to display that selected field value in the dropdown menu.
