How to populate lightning field from Chrome plugin

I've created a custom Chrome plug-in which reads a serial number from a USB card reader and populates the number into a SalesForce lightning field on a custom object. However, I've noticed when you hit submit on the form it's like the field was never populated. I've searched and searched, but I cannot find a way to modify the value of a lighting field from javascript.

In the Chrome Web Store, enter Salesforce in the Search box, then select the Salesforce extension. Click Add to Chrome and confirm Add extension to add it to your Gmail account. After adding the extension to Chrome and navigating to Gmail, enter your Salesforce credentials in the new integration pane. (https://www.benefitscal.ltd/)
