Can anyone explain the role of a salesforce developer in deployment?

In a deployment strategy (no strategy or any strategy), what is the role of a developer in the lower environments?
I would appreciate specific and detailed answers please.

I am understaning that Salesforce is a ready to use CRM platform. Business more often than not will have specific requirements that will not perfectly fit into vanilla Salesforce, this is where Salesforce devs comes in. Salesforce developers job is to integrate custom business logics and external systems into it.
