Is there a way I can automate setup audit trail download?

David - With Winter16 release Audit trail data can be accessed API. So you can connect to salesforce via API from java application or any external application  and download the audit trail records to your local system.

Can you please brief on that. Please provide me the API name and few required fields of the Audit trail object so I can fetch the details.
My org is not supporting workbench to get the details of the object.
