this is a custom object i created and the field is the standard field that is asked as "record name" during its creation.in my case the custon object is "candidate" its standard field is "candidate number".i checked the field security,it says visible and read only but while creating a record it is not visible.also the type of the standard field is an auto number

Hi Jayan,
While creating the object, you set the Candidate to be a Autonumber field. An Autonumber field is taken care by SFDC itself and it is auto calculated based on the format that you provided. Please go to the object details and click on edit link next  to the field. You can set the field to be Text and then it will be visible and editable in the Candidate record creation.

Please let me know if this is helpful.

Shashi
