API or APP to add phone number from external phone directory to contacts

Hi All,
 
I would want to know if there is any API or an APP that can be used to check for phone numbers of salesforce contact on external sites like google phone numbers, reverse directory etc and get it inserted in salesforce contact records.

The Salesforce.com Web Services API will let you update/insert contacts.

Hi Simon,

Your are right the salesforce API allows us to update insert  contacts . My question  is not that . It is if  there any API that I can use to get phone numbers from external site from salesforce and get them inserted.

regardless of where you want to do it from, you're going to need to know what (if any) the external site has API wise. Once you know that we can talk about how'd you use it from Salesforce.com
