ContactID on Case is not updating on Customer Portal

I have granted field level permissions to change the contact created on Case,but strangely
altough the portal user can select another contact from Lookup ,after  saving

Salesforce shows the same contact. ie Contact update is lost somewhere.

No triggers are running on Case on my org.

What could be the possible reason for this.? Is this a bug or something to do with sharing rules.
Any pointers will be greatly appreciated.

I didn't think you could grant access to the Contact object through the Customer Portal, even though you might have been able to change it through FLS. How is the list of available Contacts presented to the user? What Contacts can they see -- only their Account, all, etc.?
Yes, i have granted access to the ContactId Field using FLS.
All contacts that belong to same account are shown to the user ?
But the problem,even though user can select another contact, the new contact is not updated.
