LAst Activity on reports equivilent

Hi,

As there is no access to reports via the api now is there a way to simulate the "last activity" checkbox on the "accounts general" section of accounts reporting via the api?

No way to get this in the api today, we are considering it for the future

Can you at least define how 'Last Activity' is determined?  Is it derived from any associated object update or just specific objects?

Yes, any associated object update should update the lastActivity field.

Sorry to be dense but is there really a 'field' called lastActivity or is this a calculated value?

It's a calculated value, available in reports and lists. It's on the roadmap to make it available queryable in the API
