Attach a file to a custom object?

I see that you can attach a file to a case.  Is it possible to get this functionality for a custom object?

It's already enabled for you.  Just go to the page layout of the custom object in question and add the Notes & Attachments related list to the Related Lists section.

and what about this ield not being compulsory? is it possible? As I can see it's always required.

I'm not sure what you mean.  Nothing about a related list is compulsory, and Notes & Attachments are not a field.
