Attachment Compression

Is there current or planned support for compression on the salesforce server side for attachments to custom objects?  Is there planned support for being able to add custom fields to the attachment object (for example if i wanted to add a version number field)?

Hello,

We have recently launced an AppExchange application called FTP Attachments. Pro version of this application supports storing multiple version of the attachments. So that you can go back to any version of the document and review it.

Also there is field Comment so you can add your own comments for each version of the document.
