Can you pass the contents of a field to a a child object?

I've created a custom object, let's say Object1__c and I have another custom object called Object2__c.

Object1__c had a custom field text field called BrandName;

Object2__c is a child of Object1__c. 

Can I pass the contents of BrandName to a custom field in Object2__c?

My first question to you would be 'Why'?  If the information is in a related object, you can get it in a report or show it on a page with a mini-layout hover.
