Removing Standard buttons

How can I remove buttons based on certain status? For example, if the lead is in progress status, disable or remove the edit button?

I think you can use work flow.

Buttons derive from the page layout, and the only way to change the page layout is to change the record type.  So you could make a workflow that changes the record type of the object according to the status, and make corresponding page layouts that show the buttons you want for that record type.
