How to add a link or button to an edit page?

While creating/editing a custom object record, Id like users to be able to click a link or button that would open a new window. Is it possible to add such component to the edit page? And if so, what would be the best way to do it, ideally without creating a whole new Visualforce page...

Unfortunately you cannot presently add a link or button to an edit page itself.  There is only one place on the edit page that you can add such a thing, and that is to the sidebar (if you have it set to show custom sidebar components on all pages).
