Gray out a date field?

Hello,
 
I was just wondering if there was any way to gray out a date field in an opportunity so that the user has nothing to input and also the system does not require the field to have data in it?

I actually found a work-around for my issue by deactivation another Activation Rule that was causing my issues.

For the record, you could have just set it to be Read-Only in your page layout.  You could set a record type on Opportunity which maps to that page layout and which the Opportunity changes itself to when it meets certain criteria (using a workflow field update).
