Searching within attachments

Hello,

Does anyone know if it's possible to search within attachments?  For instance, I want to be able to search within Word documents or Excel spreadsheets that are attachments in a repository.  It looks like NetDocuments is doing something like this.  Ditto for Appiro.  Any idea how I can add this capability to my cusom apps?

Neither of those are actually searching attachments.  NetDocuments searches docs on their own site (with an interface in Salesforce), Appirio is searching Google Docs that are linked from Salesforce.

Right now there is nothing in Salesforce that provides for full-text search of Attachments.  One option though is to use Salesforce Content, where the documents would be stored in the content repository and can then be linked to objects (so instead of an Attachments related list you'd use the Related Content related list).  Content provides some pretty powerful full text search and preview capabilities, as well as version control, subscriptions, tagging, etc.
