The WhatId is a reference to a record ID.  The record Id for any record can be found in the URL when you are viewing the record detail page.  For example, if I bring up a contact in my org and look at the URL I see this: https://na2.salesforce.com/0033000000F4wuT.  The record ID is the 0033000000F4wuT part...
