How can I create a picklist of valid US 2-letter state codes in the Lead object?
I need to force users to use standard values, rather than their own conventions.

I have never understood they do not allow to make a standard picklist for either or both states and country. But reading some dreamforce conference materials it will be possibe to create lookup on certain fields (it was not really clear on this) and the lookup data be stored in custom objects.
So wait for winter'06 release

PS: Could we have also a real event handler for workflow this is definetily a feature request. It will allow people not to have their own polling systems
