I have found it to be a good basic reference. It tells you what the different objects are, what information they can contain and how they relate to other standard objects.
It does not help you program in VisualForce and/or Apex. It does not get into advanced development, just simple and basic configuration.
BTW, this is a free book that salesforce.com gives away...
