User is for authentication purpose, its just an entity.

Profile is a collection of settings and permissions that determine what a user can do in the platform, kind of like a group in a Windows network, where all of the members of the group have the same folder permissions and access to the same software.

A profile can be assigned to many users, but a user can be assigned to only one profile at a time.

Roles: primarily control a user's record-level access permissions through role hierarchy and sharing rules

User in salesforce org is identified with a username who can use the Salesforce apps for his business needs..

Profiles: Generally a profile contains settings and permissions which controls what the Users can do in a Salesforce org.

They control which apps the user can access, what administrative privileges he can have and what CRUD permissions he has on the objects.

Roles: Every User in Salesforce will have  Role assigned to him. Roles generally control the data visibility  for the Users in the org.
