Every User in salesforce org is identified with a username who can use the Salesforce apps for his business needs..
Profiles: Generally a profile contains settings and permissions which controls what the Users can do in a Salesforce org.
They control which apps the user can access, what administrative privileges he can have and what CRUD permissions he has on the objects.
Roles: Every User in Salesforce will have Role assigned to him. Roles generally control the data visibility for the Users in the org.
Every User in org will have a Single Profile and a Role assigned to him.
