Hide new opportunity button in sfdc

Hello

I would like to restrict a few profiles from creating new opty through the opty tab.They should only be allowed to create optys through contacts tab.

Any suggestions ?

I do not know how to remove the "new" button off of the opportunity home page. You can override the "new" button with your own custom button.

did you find a solution for this. I am having the same requirement. please let me know if you found a work around for it.
