Don't see Sandbox in the free, developer version

I've done tutorials #s 1-4 in the force.com workbook. Prior to #5 the documentation says you need to create a sandbox and continue the tutorials there. The documentation says you should find Sandbox under Setup | Data Management.

No Sandbox in that location with my free, developer version - nor anywhere else that I've looked?
I'm going to guess that you're actually using a free Developer Edition environment. Something you got here:
http://developer.force.com/join
The Developer Edition (DE) environment doesn't have a sandbox. You can change stuff directly in the environment. If this is what you've got, continue using it. The workbook works just fine in the DE environment.
[EDIT: There is no Force.com Free Edition any longer (edit on 13/14/2012)]
If you want to play with the Force.com Free Edition (FFE) - check it out here: https://www.salesforce.com/form/signup/freeforce-platform.jsp
FFE does have a sandbox. As I say above, you can simply continue using the DE instead if you like.

Hmm that's annoying. I've posted twice to the developerforce forums and each time portions of my post get doubled-up.
Or rather that's what happened in Firefox 4 beta 7; I've switched now to IE 8 and to judge by Preview the problem may have gone away.

Yes I think you're right Jon - that I'm using the developer edition. I believe I recognize the 'join' URL you show and for that matter the top of this developerforce page shows 'DE login'.
So I'll simply proceed with the tutorials without a Sandbox.
