Cases - For new cases making it default to Send notification email to contact

With regards to the option in new cases to "Send notification email to contact" is there a way to make this default checked? I see that you can individually save preferences for tasks to do this but cant see an option for cases.

No code required.  Go to Setup | Customize | Cases | Page Layouts, click on the Layout Properties button at the top, and under Email Notifications turn on Select By Default.  Save the layout, and you're golden.  Repeat for all case page layouts you want to be defaulted like this.

This is sending out an email every time it's updated- not just when it's new - is there a way to make it send an email ONLY when a new case is created?

As anotini said, iy you choose this option the send email is checked each time you edit for example the details of the case, and therefore a new email is sent to the contact.
