I have a requirement where in i have to chagne teh color of the Cases standard tab. Please let me know if there is any way to do this.

No, I don't think so if it is possible ..

You could hijack a sidebar component (using "display custom sidebar components on all pages"), and write up a CSS block, but that could break at any time (the HTML format of the page is not guaranteed static).

Can you little bit elaborate on hijacking the side bar component and writing up a css block? i've had many situtations where i had to hack the underlying standard CSS but i was just not able to figure out.
