Am not sure with your specific req as we can close a case.
When you close a case there are lot of business logic implemented at backend which effect the fields on case (stage, close date etc) and other objects like Campaign etc. So you must be clear with your requirement.
If you only need to maintain the stage for life cycle of account, you can create custom picklist on account and handel the values via a trigger.
