What does the "View All Data" admin checkbox enable?

I've found a fair amount of documentation behind what the "modify all data" option enables, but what does the "view all data" option specifically enable?

It allows users in that profile to view all the data but not necessarily to change or delete it.  So, for instance, say you have a private sharing model on Opportunity -- users with View All Data would be able to see all Opportunities regardless of what's shared to them, but they wouldn't necessarily be able to edit these opportunities.
