Custom Activities Object

Has anyone created a custom Activities object that is basically a clone of Activities (tasks & events) for different types of activities?  A group of users on our platform want their own section of Activities on an opportunity that is separate from the general Activities.

Why not use Record Types? You can then assign this record type to certain profile of users who can define a specific type of Task/Event - without having to reinvent the wheel.

That's what I had proposed, but they had originally wanted these activities in their own section.  After revisting the issue with the end users, they agreed to using record types.
