Disable Approval Email Notifications

I'm new to SFDC development, and we are looking to "turn off" the notifications that are sent when someone submits a case for approval.  With the amount of cases that we have that require approval, the emails are an unnecessary hardship for all the individuals in the queue for approval.  Can this be turned off or disabled?

You can decide which one you want to keep

Modify the approval process.. From final Approval actions, remove Email Alert

Will this remove the notification when someone submits something for approval?  Or when something is approved/rejected?  Or both?

I'm sorry ... I've been checking and am having a hard time finding where the details of the approval process is saved, so that I can disable the email sending.  I am also being told by our 3rd party developer that this is NOT something that can be changed.  Can someone help with a step-by-step?
