Manual Sharing - very basic question

Hi,

 

 In our organization I set the OWD to be Public Read Only for one of our custom object.

 

When I am manual sharing one of the records to a specific user or group (giving the a READ/WRITE access) the sharing doesn't seems to work. When I login as the user whom the record was shared with I can only view the record and cannot edit.

 

In the Manual Sharing records I see the name of the user/group with an access level of READ/WRITE. 

 

Am I missing something really basic??

On the profile that is viewing it, they have to have Edit.

 

A sharing rule of Read/Write will still not provide it if the profile does not have the Edit on the object.

Thanks. I knew it was something basic I was missing. I thought the the WRITE permission will be given upon sharing without it being preconfigured.
