Standard Name field: Auto Number to Text to Autonumber

Hi All,

 

Has this necessity rised for you before?

 

To convert a standard field Name set up as an Auto Number into Text in order to edit a record and then convert the Name field into Text again?

 

What might be the backlash/impact of this change?

Hi AIW,

 

One impact of this change will be that the display format you setup for the auto number will only apply to the new reords you create.

The old records that were already entered as text will have to be manually updated to the display format of the new Auto number type.

One problem is that when you change it to text, in between that if you create records then that field will be blank, and afterwords when again changing it ti Auto Number, it will start from the no next to the one you created before changing to text means

are the two records before changing to text. Then after that you create some records, as usual that field is blank. then again changing it to Auto Number, record creation after that will make

A-003

So it will not be in correct order.

 

Also if you change the format while defining the Auto Number second time, new records well be reflected by that, not the old ones.
