hide the custom field while creating the record

Hi,

 

i want to hide the picklist cutom field while creating the record. and need to change this value while triggering the mail as field update. based ont he field value i will be taking decession  to whom i should trigger the mail...

 

 

could you please help me how to do this functinality..

Is there any reason you can't just remove this from the page layout?

As per your requirement you need to remove this field from layout and in this case you will not be able to show on detail page also. or you can do it be overriding your edit and detail page by VF page then it is possible
