Archive standard and custom object records

From what I've read Activities are automatically archived based on criteria.

Is there a way to archive other standard object records? How about custom object records? Our data space is used up a lot right now by custom object records that business is hesitant to remove even though they dont use them. So sounds like we want to archive them with critera much like that for activities. What are our options?

Found out answer. SFDC does not offer any archival service for non-activity standard or custom objects.

One choice are to try an consolidate records for which you just need to report aggregate numbers on into just one custom record with the agrregate numbers and then remove the individual records.

Another choice is to backup records to an outside system and provide some way to access from salesforce when needed.
