Hi,

Please help me in understanding the difference between Setup Audit trail and field history tracking in salesforce.

Thanks

The Setup Audit Trial is on the Organization level,
Field History Tracking is on the Object level.

The setup audit trail history helps you track the recent setup changes that you and other administrators have made to your organization. This can be especially useful in organizations with multiple administrators.

Setup Audit trail : this tracks the configuration & metadata  changes done recently

field history tracking : this tracks the data changes for that field recently

Field History tracking:
If you enable field track history for any of the fields on the objets. It will track all changes made to the field values in records for that object and maintains in History related list for that record.

Field value tracking for a record changes

View Setup Audit Trail:
The view Setup Audit Trail will track all metadata changes incluing object, fields, layouts, class, page etc..and displays latest 20 changes.
If you want to see last 6 months metadata changes need to download the csv file.

Audit trial dispalys metadata changes details

Unlike View Setup Audit Trail which displays only latest 20 records ..there is an app AutoRABIT( https://appexchange.salesforce.com/listingDetail?listingId=a0N30000000ptkwEAA )in appexchanage which is based on Salesforce APIs whcih can track all metdata changes based on given date/time,metadata name/type,createdby/modifiedby user etc..

   Sample view from this app

Niranjan.
