Remove Approved Submissions for approval

I have some records where a user has submitted for approval and been approved.  Now I am in a scenario where I want to erase the approval completely.

 

Is there a way to do this via the UI or the API?

I'm fairly sure that you can't do this: there's no delete permission on ProcessInstance, the object responsible for tracking this data.

Yeah, this is what I was told by SF Tier 2 support as well.

 

It's unfortunate because once something is approved and locked, you can't get it back for editing.
