adding an attribute to users

So I need to add an attribute/field to a user profile. how would i do this?

You can create custom field in User object.

it is not possible way to add any field on profile but you can add any fied on user object  and  try to achive your target

We do not know what your requirement is but I would suggest investigating hierarchical custom settings which can be org/profile/user driven and can maintain additional attributes.
